AppearanceSmall bird about 6″ long with slate gray above and white chest, belly & around the eyes. Rusty brown is below the wings, legs are gray and eyes are dark. Has a pointed “tuft” crest.
DietInsects, seeds, fruit.
Feeder FoodSuet.
HabitatOrchards are a draw for them as they consume fruit. They also live in deciduous wooded areas or mixed woods.
NestingThey build a nest within a cavity – usually an old woodpecker hole. They have 2 broods/year and 5-7 eggs/brood that are white with brown markings. Incubation lasts 13-14 days.
